Kitesurf Lessons

Kiteboarding is a surface water sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, snowboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, skateboarding and gymnastics into one extreme sport.

A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without footstraps or bindings.

You do not need much strength at all, as you are hooked into a harness all the time. Many girls and young kids kitesurf. Our youngest kitesurfer was merely 7 when he started!

Just like paragliding or flying, the learning process is quite involved, and normally takes around 6-8 hours of one on one tuition, before you become strong enough to take your own kite out to continue practise.

Most people take 2 hour lessons each time. In the first two hours, you will be in the water flying a full size kite. You will learn all the basic skills - from safety, trainer kite, set up, onto flying the big kite, doing body dragging downwind.
Once you can body drag downwind and upwind without crashing the kite, learnt the relaunching and self rescue, you are ready for the board.

First two hours will cost $200, after that $160 every two hours. At the end of your lessons, you can claim back the first 4 hours back ($360) or 8 hours on our Rolls Royce Package ($680) as discount towards the purchase of equipment sets from us.

The following is our typical one on one lesson format.

0-60minutes (on land): Safety, right of way, theory, location assessment, wind direction, set up, safety & depower systems, handling of equipment, launching and landing knowledge.
61-120minutes (on water): Launching and landing on water, relaunching, flying skills and body dragging.

121-240minutes (on water): Student will recap and practise everything that was learnt in the first lesson. Once the student has attained good control in their flying skills, i.e. not crashing the kite out of control and able to body drag up and downwind successfully, he/she is ready for board start. The second lesson will finish with learning how to self-rescue.

241-360minutes (on water): Third lesson. This lesson student should be able to demonstrate all skills and basic knowledge learnt in the previous 2 lessons: from setting up by themselves, launching, landing, flying skills, body dragging to getting up on the board.

Similar to driving, some people pick it up fairly quick, some needs a few more lessons to have good confidence and control. Your instructor will advise you whether or not you are ready to purchase their own equipment and go on your own, or if you still need more lessons.

After your learning, you will be registered and certified as an official IKO kiteboarder to the level you have attained. You can access your V-Card (Virtual Card) via the IKO website, or via the IKO app. The certification not only allows you monitor your progress in learning, but it also gives you a lot of benefits and entitlement to IKO system, such as gear rental at any IKO centres around the world.

Kiteboarding is an extreme and a very high risk sport. Many people has been seriously injured due to inexperience and negligence. Do not take your chances to learn from unaccredited schools or people who claim they can teach. Most shops are not accredited schools, and use unqualified staff so called instructors to teach. Ask to see their teaching qualifications and more importantly, their insurance cover, before you take lessons.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call on 07-3137 0500 anytime. Our staff will give you an extensive run down on what kitesurfing is all about and what is involved in the learning process. Otherwise if you are ready to take the plunge.......
